The Basque Language Publishers Association, founded in 1984, aims to group together all publishing houses that publish works written in Basque. The association's main aim is to promote and defend the publication of works in the Basque language, and to represent, manage and defend the common interests of its members.
Textbook production begins to teeter
The literary sector warns that the loans system is threatening the survival of the cultural industry operating in the Basque language. A study by the Deusto Institute of Leisure Studies found that:
- One out of every 4 books published in Basque is a textbook.
- 25% of all books purchased are textbooks.
- 8.5% of all works published in the Basque Country are written in Basque.
- 37.5% of the industry's global turnover corresponds to texts written in Basque.
- 70% of the turnover for (non university) textbooks corresponds to manuals in Basque, which in turn account for 35.9% of the total turnover for works written in this language.
- Publishers, booksellers and distributors support a free supply model based on direct subsidies.
